What Is a Good Tapping Speed?
Tapping speed is how many times you can tap in a fixed time, usually expressed as taps per second (TPS). On TAPP's illustrative bands, around 5 to 7 taps per second with one finger over 30 seconds is typical, 7 or more is a strong score and 9 or more is fast. Short bursts are quicker than long runs because tapping rate falls as fatigue sets in. TAPP Classic measures it over 30 seconds and ranks verified scores worldwide.

What Does TPS Mean and How Do You Measure It?
Taps per second (TPS) is taps divided by seconds. 5 to 7 TPS is typical with one finger, 9 or more is fast, and short bursts run higher than 30-second averages. See the numbers and how to test yours.

Read →What tapping speed means
Tapping speed is a measure of how fast you can repeat a simple finger movement. It combines three things: the raw frequency your finger can cycle at, the rhythm you can hold, and endurance, because most people fade in the second half of a 30-second run. It is reported as total taps in a window, or as taps per second so that different durations can be compared.
It is a different skill from reaction time. Reaction time is one fast response to a signal, measured in milliseconds. Tapping speed is a sustained motor rhythm with no new information to process once you have started.
What counts as a good taps-per-second score
| Taps per second | 30-second total | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 5–7 | 150–210 | Typical |
| 7–9 | 210–270 | Strong |
| 9–11 | 270–330 | Fast; roughly top 10% |
| 11+ | 330+ | Elite; roughly top 1%, usually two thumbs |
A computerised finger-tapping study of 1,519 adults aged 18 to 65 found that the dominant hand tapped faster than the non-dominant hand, that tapping rate fell from one 10-second period to the next, that rates declined with age, and that men tapped faster than women. TAPP's bands are its own working estimates for touchscreen play and are not taken from that study.
What affects tapping speed
- Technique: a tiny movement from a rested hand beats a big movement from the wrist.
- Rhythm: uneven tapping loses more taps than a slightly slower steady pace.
- Endurance: tapping rate falls across successive 10-second periods in finger-tapping research, so pacing decides 30-second scores.
- Fingers used: alternating two thumbs is faster than one finger, which is why the top of the TAPP board is two-thumb play.
- The device: touch latency and how the game counts taps set the ceiling. TAPP counts at most one tap every 50 ms.
- Hand dominance and age, as in finger-tapping research.
How to measure your tapping speed
- Pick a fixed window. 30 seconds is the TAPP Classic format; 5 or 10 seconds shows your burst speed.
- Tap a single large button with one finger or two thumbs and count total taps.
- Divide taps by seconds to get taps per second, so runs of different lengths can be compared.
- Repeat two or three times; second and third attempts are usually faster.
TAPP's browser tap speed test does this for you: total taps, taps per second, your best one-second burst and how evenly you paced the run.
How TAPP scores tapping speed
TAPP Classic is a 30-second tapping challenge. The clock starts on your first tap and the score is the number of taps you land before it ends. At most one tap every 50 milliseconds is counted, which caps the theoretical maximum at 20 taps per second. In the app the server checks each run before it is ranked, and verified scores go on the Classic leaderboard: daily, weekly and all-time, globally and by country.
Browser runs on this site use the same timing and are for practice. They are not verified, so they are not ranked.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good tapping speed?
Around 7 taps per second sustained for 30 seconds is a strong score, and 9 or more is fast. Most people land between 5 and 7 with one finger. These bands are illustrative until TAPP publishes live figures.
What is the fastest possible score in TAPP Classic?
TAPP counts at most one tap every 50 ms, so the ceiling is 20 taps per second, or 600 taps in 30 seconds. That is a counting limit, not a score anyone is expected to reach.
Is tapping speed the same as clicks per second?
Same idea, different input. Clicks per second (CPS) is measured with a mouse; taps per second (TPS) with a touchscreen. TAPP's click speed test reports CPS on desktop.
Does tapping speed measure reaction time?
No. Tapping speed is a sustained rhythm in taps per second; reaction time is one response in milliseconds. TAPP measures them separately in Classic and Dodge.
