What Does TPS Mean and How Do You Measure It?

Short answer

Taps per second is your total taps divided by the length of the run. On TAPP's illustrative bands, 5 to 7 TPS with one finger is typical, 7 to 9 is strong and 9 or more is fast over 30 seconds. Short bursts of 5 or 10 seconds usually run higher than a 30-second average because tapping rate falls as fatigue sets in. TAPP's top band, 11 TPS and above, assumes two alternating thumbs.

What taps per second means

Taps per second (TPS) normalises tapping speed so that runs of different lengths can be compared. 60 taps in 10 seconds and 180 taps in 30 seconds are both 6 TPS, even though the 30-second run is harder to sustain. On desktop the same figure is called clicks per second (CPS).

How fast is fast?

Illustrative TPS bands by duration, one finger. TAPP's working estimates, not live data.

5–7TypicalTypical
7–9GoodStrong
9–11FastVery fast; roughly top 10%
11+Very fastElite; roughly top 1%

These bands are TAPP's working estimates, not published norms. Finger-tapping research does show that rate depends on hand dominance, age, sex and how long you keep tapping: in one study of 1,519 adults the dominant hand was faster, rates fell from one 10-second period to the next, and older participants tapped more slowly. Game scores can run higher than laboratory rates because touchscreens register light taps and players use two thumbs.

Why bursts are faster than long runs

Tapping rate falls as the run goes on: finger-tapping research measured a decline from each 10-second period to the next, so a short sprint is usually faster than a 30-second average. That is why a good 30-second score is more about holding a rhythm than about peak speed. Your best one-second burst and your consistency across the run tell you which of the two is limiting you.

How to measure your TPS

  1. Choose 5, 10 or 30 seconds. Use 5 or 10 for burst speed and 30 for the Classic format.
  2. Tap the button as fast as you can; the clock starts on your first tap.
  3. Read total taps and taps per second at the end, then go again. Later attempts are usually faster.

TPS in TAPP

TAPP Classic reports a 30-second total, and the site shows taps per second alongside it. Because at most one tap is counted every 50 ms, the maximum possible is 20 TPS. TAPP's taps per second test lets you choose 5, 10 or 30 seconds and shows your TPS live.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 taps per second fast?

Yes. Sustaining 10 TPS for 30 seconds is 300 taps, which sits in TAPP's top illustrative bands. As a short burst it is fast but more achievable.

How many taps per second can a human do?

There is no single figure. TAPP's illustrative bands put typical one-finger tapping at 5 to 7 taps per second and elite two-thumb play at 11 or more, and the game counts at most 20 per second. Published finger-tapping studies show that rate depends on hand dominance, age, sex and how long you tap for.

What is the difference between TPS and CPS?

Only the input. TPS counts taps on a touchscreen; CPS counts mouse clicks. Both are taps or clicks divided by seconds.
